How to service your split AC

How to Service Your Split AC

A dirty air conditioner works harder to cool your room. This wastes electricity and raises your monthly bills. Dust buildup also puts stress on the compressor, which can lead to a total breakdown. Regular cleaning ensures the air stays fresh and the machine lasts much longer. It is the easiest way to avoid a hot room in the middle of summer.

Steps to Service Your Unit

1-Power Down and Isolation

Disconnect the unit from the electrical source. Turn off the circuit breaker to prevent electrical accidents. On Skyair units, ensuring the main isolator is off prevents damage to sensitive inverter boards during cleaning.

2-Clean Air Filters

Open the front panel. On brands like Daikin or Samsung, lift the bottom of the panel until it clicks into a stay. Slide out the mesh filters. Wash them with tap water to remove dust. They must be dry before you reinstall them to prevent mold growth on the evaporator.

3-Brush the Evaporator Coils

Dust settles on the aluminum fins behind the filters. Use a soft brush or a specialized fin comb to clear the debris. Move the brush vertically to avoid damaging the fins. Some Mitsubishi units have a dual-barrier coating; use only soft nylon brushes here to avoid stripping the protective layer.

4-Wash the Condenser Unit

Remove leaves and dirt from the outdoor unit. Spray the coils with a garden hose. Avoid high-pressure settings to protect internal components. For units in coastal areas, check for salt corrosion on the base pan while the casing is clear.

5- Inspect the Drain Pipe

Check the plastic tube that carries water outside. Remove any sludge or dirt blocking the flow. A clear pipe prevents water from leaking inside the room. Brands with shallow drain pans, like certain LG models, require a completely clear path to avoid immediate overflow.

How to check it is cleaned properly?

The air feels colder and the fan blows harder after a thorough cleaning. Hold the filters to the light; they are clean if the mesh is transparent. The outdoor unit appears free of mud and obstructions. The indoor unit operates without unusual vibrations or noise.

Follow These Maintenance Tips

  1. Keep windows and curtains closed to minimize heat entry.

  2. Wash the filters every fourteen days during summer.

  3. Do not place furniture directly in front of the AC.

  4. Maintain a temperature setting of 24 degrees for efficiency.

  5. Ensure the outdoor unit has at least two feet of clear space for airflow.

When To Call AC Technician?

Call an HVAC technician if you suspect a refrigerant leak. Ice on the copper lines or hissing sounds indicate a need for professional repair. Burning odors or grinding sounds point to electrical or motor failure. Annual inspections help identify these risks before the unit stops working.
